At Frame, we’re all about rich culinary storytelling, using food as a lens to highlight the remarkable people and cultures that create it.

So it’s with immense pride that we announce our next up immersive food storytelling collaboration with the Freep Film Festival and Coldwater Kitchen, a feature-length documentary about a dedicated chef’s fine-dining culinary training program inside a Michigan prison.

Produced over the last five years by the Detroit Free Press, Coldwater Kitchen is co-directed by Frame’s own editorial director, Mark Kurlyandchik, and was named one of IndieWire’s “10 Must-See Films” when it premiered at DOC NYC in November.
We are beyond thrilled to bring it home.

In addition to opening the 10th annual Freep Film Festival, Coldwater Kitchen will come to life in Frame’s moody dining room, as the film’s protagonist Chef Jimmy Lee Hill cooks a sumptuous meal with two of his former students, Dink Dawson and Ernest Davis, both of whom star in the film.
Kurlyandchik and co-director Brian Kaufman will also be on hand, circulating through the dining room to share personal stories about the making of the film while you enjoy Chef Hill’s bright quinoa salad with collards and lime-yogurt dressing, seared Thai scallops with sweet potato mash, Asian-glazed bone-in lamb chops with rice, and decadent “Black Magic” cake.

Opt to watch the film first and enjoy your communal chef dinner after, or vice versa — dinner first and the film following. Our covered and heated screening room in the Frame Pavilion is fitted with a limited bar serving imaginative cocktails, popcorn, and candy before the film.

Much more than just dinner, this three-night collaboration promises to be an extraordinary experience highlighting the transformative power of food and stories.
You Don’t Want To Miss It!
